The 7.62x39mm round was developed during WWII, and was first used in the RPD machine gun. Soon after the RPD was completed, more weapons began to use this cartridge, including the SKS and AK-47. The first widespread use of the round was seen with the AKM assault rifle[1].
Performance

The 7.62x39mm round is usually effective at moderate to long ranges. This caliber is used by a wide selection of firearms, including the AK family rifles and the SKS.
