The AK-74 is a Russian selective fire assault rifle, chambered for the 5.45x39mm round.

The AK-74 was developed in the early 1970’s as a replacement for the 7.62x39mm AKM that was in service with the Russian army at that time. When completed, it introduced a new type of intermediate cartridge, the 5.45x39mm round. The new type of round made for a more accurate and reliable rifle. However, because the new round developed for the AK-74 was smaller, so it had significantly lower stopping power than the AKM[1].

In the 1990's, a new program was put in place to find a replacement for the AK-74. The AN-94 Abakan was the result of this program. It had a 1800 RPM two round burst feature, which could easily penetrate body armor, and was extremely advanced, outclassing the AK-74 in nearly every field. Later on in the AN-94's development, funding for the project was discontinued, and eventually, the project was cancelled. This was due to the expensive cost of the new rifle, as well as a low budget from the post-Soviet Russian economy[2].

However, this was not the end for the search for a replacement for the outdated AK-74. In 2012, Mikhail Kalashnikov unveiled his last devolopment, the AK-12. Like the AN-94, the AK-12 featured a 1800 RPM burst feature, but the AK-12 fired 3 shots rather than two. The rifle has multiple picatinny rails which can fit a multitude of attachments. It accepts many types of ammunition, such as 12 Gauge, 5.45x39mm, 5.56x45mm, and 7.62x51mm. The AK-12 can also be modified to perform during multiple roles, such as CQC, long range combat, and standard infantry. The AK-12 will replace the AK-74 somewhere in the near future[3].

The AK-74 is much like the AK-47 in appearance. It has a wooden forestock and buttstock, and a receiver nearly identical to the AK-47. However, the color scheme is much brighter. Also, the magazine used in the AK-74 is bright orange, instead of the dark black 7.62x39mm one that the AK-47 uses.

The AK-74 performs well at close range, with high hip fire accuracy, a decent fire rate, and low recoil, outclassing most other assault rifles in these fields. The rifle has a low amount of damage, due to the low caliber round that it uses. The rifle takes 30, 45, and 75 round magazines.

Recommended UseEdit

The AK-74 should be used in CQC, due to its low recoil and high hip fire accuracy. The weapon can also be fired with ADS in CQC, due to the low amount of recoil that it has. Long range combat with this weapon is not recommended when compared with other weapons, such as the M4A1 , G36k, and AK-12.

The AK-74 can also fit two types of attachments, being optics and a suppressor. For people intending on killing other survivors, a suppressor is not recommended, due to the fact that the rifle will not be able to deal enough damage to kill a player in enough time during a firefight. If you are being a neutral player, I recommend a suppressor in order to avoid zombies and attention from other players. Recommended optics for the weapon include the Kobra and Reflex sights, due to the high amount of CQC accuracy they provide. You can also use the default iron sights of the weapon, if they appeal to you.

  • The AK-74 has a shortened counterpart, the AKS-74U. The AKS-74U performs better at close range, but lacks in longer range power.
  • In real life the Russian Army uses the AK-74M variant(M here stands for Modernized).
